During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, after Syracuse University students were sent home for the foreseeable future, The Daily Orange asked 15 photographers to document their experiences in quarantine. Here are their stories.
When I started my term as photo editor at The Daily Orange in April 2020, I set out to create a project that would convey how students were experiencing the pandemic. Our photojournalists, however, were scattered across the globe, making it challenging to tell this story as we would a typical student life story during a typical semester. Consequently, I began brainstorming a way to tell this story by embracing the geographic obstacle rather than avoiding it.
From this idea, I pitched “Waiting for Normal,” a series of vignettes from 15 photographers documenting their lives in quarantine. Because this was a photo-driven story, one of my priorities was presenting the photo essay in a way that highlighted the visuals; thus, I worked alongside our web development and digital design teams to create a visually driven web page.
With so many moving parts and 15 participating photographers, a large part of my role as photo editor was ensuring that the project steadily progressed in order to make our deadline of launching at the beginning of the fall semester. To do this, I kept organized and tracked deliverables through spreadsheets, and I regularly checked in with photographers and offered assistance when needed.
