L'dor V'dor: From Generation to Generation is a retelling of my family's plight from Europe during the Holocaust as told through reimagined archival photos, documents, hand-written notes and original photography. I deliberately hand made the photo book because this is a very personal story and I wanted to be part of the creation process; therefore, after editing and designing the book, I printed each page, hand-bound the book and constructed the cover. My role in this project started with the ideation of the project and, over the course of a three-year timeline, ended in the execution of a hand-bound photo book.
My primary task for this project consisted of photo editing: combing through containers of archival documents and photographs and weaving them into a succinct storyline. From conception, this project felt like it was made to be a book, since it was a story I wanted to be physically present with the reader. I, however, had only ever edited for web and newspapers before, therefore I delved into the world of photo books, looking for the particularities of photo book editing, like how the edit and whitespace dictates flow and pacing.
I pursued this project after digesting the wise words of a mentor, who said that in order to best tell the stories of others, one must first tell their own story. I believe this to be true, in that telling my own story has made me a more caring and understanding visual storyteller.
L'dor V'dor was published L'dor V'dor on CNN on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, in April 2023 thanks to the help and support of photo editor Laura Oliverio. The book also placed 2nd in the 2023 International Photography Awards' non-professional fine art book category and was named a finalist in Photo Lucida's 2023 Critical Mass awards. An edit of images from L'dor V'dor was also shortlisted for the professional creative category for the World Photography Organisation's 2023 Sony World Photography Awards.
