On December 21, 1988, Pan Am 103 exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland. The terrorist attack killed 270 people: all 259 people on the plane as well as 11 people on the ground. Of the 259 people on the plane, 35 were Syracuse University Abroad students returning home for winter break.
Every year since the attack, Syracuse University has chosen 35 students to carry on the legacies of the 35 students who were killed that December day. The cohort of Remembrance Scholars dedicate themselves to the program's promise to "look back and act forward," and they plan and execute the annual Remembrance Week, filled with displays like the Rose-Laying Ceremony and Sitting in Solidarity.
